“Total big dog.” These were the words chosen by head baseball coach Steve Schuck to describe this edition’s Athlete of the Month, Emi Ramirez. While it may seem like a joke to some, it proves to be an appropriate description.  Coach Schuck went on to say that his favorite thing about him is, “his competitiveness, the way he goes about his business…he doesn’t let anything affect him and he constantly wants to be in the middle of stuff so he’s just a warrior.”

As a senior this year, baseball has been a part of Ramirez’s life for as long as he can remember.

“I started at four or five years old, I was always playing baseball around the house because my older brother played so I’ve just always been around it,” Ramirez explained. He has come a long way since then as he is now serving as the captain of the varsity squad this year. When asked why he chose to continue playing all these years, Ramirez cited, “the experience, the fun I was having and the people I was meeting,” as his main reasons.

Having been a part of Dons baseball for the past four years, Ramirez has seen the team through the good and bad times, with his favorite memories being, “the past Anaheim tournament we were in, I think we got along really well and winning the Channel League last year that was pretty lit”.

As far as this season is concerned, Ramirez is proud of the work the team is putting in. “The season is a work in progress, everyone is together so we’re still gonna go out and compete,” he explained. In terms of his own performance at pitcher, coach Schuck had nothing but praise, saying, “his last three outings on the mound have been phenomenal, he’s a warrior and the team just feeds off his energy.” With the end of the season fast approaching, Ramirez reflected on the impact baseball has had on his life so far and how he plans to continue with the sport. “I just want to play as long as I can, I know it’s not going to be in my life forever playing-wise, but I’m going to have fun while I can and continue playing.” Whatever the future holds, Ramirez is sure to carry with him the many memories and lessons learned at the mound.
