On Wednesday, April 15, soon-to-be SBHS graduates signed a formal commitment to the university of their choice.

Derek Jaye, SBHS varsity baseball player, signed to Whitman College. Jaye has been playing baseball since he was in preschool. He was inspired to start playing because of his parents’ motivation. “I’m most excited to experience new things and learn new things in college. When I visited Whitman, I played really well, and I loved the campus.”

Along with Jaye, Max Weddle has committed to Chaminade University. Weddle started playing baseball when he was around five years old and has stuck with it ever since.

“My dad has been my biggest inspiration. His work ethic helped me get into baseball, and he’s a role model for me every day. I’m looking forward to playing baseball, having fun, and meeting new people.”

Finally, for baseball, Jetner Welch signed his commitment at Claremont McKenna College. Welch has been playing baseball since the age of five.

“My dad has been my biggest inspiration because he’s always been there for me for when I need him the most. Besides playing baseball, I’m most excited to branch out into a new circle of people and explore a new dynamic. Claremont was the best academic choice and felt like a good fit for me as a person.”

Despite being a star thrower in track, offensive tackle Malachi Johnston is committed to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for football.

“I’ve been playing football for nine years. Coach Jalen has been my biggest inspiration. He was my first football coach and he motivates me and everyone around us to play better.” When asked about Cal Poly, Johnston replied, “Learning new things is the main thing I’m excited for in college. I think there’s only so much you can learn in high school and I’m really ready to progress. Cal Poly is close to home and they have a winning mentality and I think that’s the place that will make me the best version of myself.

Micheal “Monty” Lopez, has committed to Cal Lutheran for football as well.

“I’ve been playing football for thirteen years. All my coaches, especially Jalen have been around since I was young and they inspired me to stick with it. I’m most excited to play football and experience college life.”

Lopez graduated SBHS early in January and has already started training with the Cal Lutheran football team; he will be ready to go in the fall!

Everyone at Santa Barbara High School has been cheering on these Dons for the last four years and will continue to do so as they go off to college to do great things!
