California is known for its beautiful scenery, and this year we are expecting something even more beautiful than usual. With lots of rain in the north, and also rain here in the south, we are in for a treat. Especially in the north, some amazing wildflower blooms are expected throughout California. These big blooms have a fun name: superblooms! They don’t happen every year, however, 2026 is anticipated to have some impressive flowers.
Northern California, where there is commonly much more rain, often has the more impressive blooms of California. Parks like Corona Heights, Bernal Heights, Briones Regional, and Half Moon Bay are all going to have wonderful blooms. The next couple of months, especially in April, are going to be great times to go see some flowers. Although the rain isn’t quite as plentiful in Southern California, locals are still awaiting some cool flowers, specifically in Death Valley and Antelope Valley. California is the “Golden State” because of the famous poppies. Nearby, you will find bunches of these bright orange flowers, whether you see them on your drive to school or on a drive through the mountains.
Specifically, close to Santa Barbara will also have some fun flowers. With some good rainfall recently, Californians can expect an amazing bloom this year. Just a boat ride away, off the coast of Santa Barbara, on the various Channel Islands, you may find yellow coreopsis, lupine, poppies, lavender chicory, or yellow cream cups.
50 miles northeast of Santa Barbara, the Figueroa Mountain Recreation Area will have purple shooting stars, chocolate lilies, and the scarlet indian paintbrush, along with a plethora of other wonderful flowers. A beautiful scenic drive on the 154, and over the mountain, will lead you to the nearby bloom, a bit north of Los Olivos. A drive through the quaint towns of Solvang and Santa Ynez and up the mountain makes a fun adventure to see some beautiful flowers!
For closer local flower blooming places, include the Botanic Gardens, nearby The Mission. The rose gardens at the Santa Barbara Mission are also a popular viewing spot for flowers, and a beautiful place to have a picnic or spend the afternoon. The Natural History Museum also offers wonderful exhibitions for botany that are currently available to see.
On a similar note, senior Makena Taylor is currently in the gardening class at SBHS. Gardening teaches you fun skills about plants and growing them yourself. Although gardening at the high school doesn’t plant a ton of flowers, they plant some awesome things. When asked what Taylor’s favorite part of gardening is, she said, “Gardening class is definitely my favorite part of the school day. I absolutely recommend it to every student,” Taylor gets to harvest and turn soil beds. If you are interested in plants and flowers specifically, gardening is a way to help you learn more about them and how to grow them.
Whether you’re a flower fanatic or not, looking for these blooming wonders is such a fun way to spend some of your spring this year. If you are interested in cool plants, think about taking gardening class, which is also just a fun way to spend your morning.
