The Student Store, a window shop located in the meadow of SBHS, is newly up and running after three years of being closed. The kiosk is open every day during lunch, where one can buy $2 snacks like noodles, pretzels, Nutella & GO, granola bars and pastries. Additionally, there are drink options for sale, such as $2 Poppi soda, hot chocolate and a $4 iced hazelnut latte – along with various SBHS merchandise.
All the food is run and sold by members of the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA). One of the members, Rebecca Borgioli, explained how they got the Student Store back in business after it closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “After Covid, they weren’t selling food anymore because the cafeteria was selling food. So we decided, why not? We got permission from the school district to not compete (with the cafeteria), and we could sell snacks that were healthy. We launched after spring break to kind of see how it goes till the end of the year,” she says.
Looking at the activity outside the Student Store during lunch, it is apparent that students are interested. Though the business has gotten a good amount of customers so far, the PTSA members propose a new idea they hope will pique even more students’ interest. “What we’re gonna try to do in the last month (of this school year) is to launch food once or twice a week,” says Borgioli. Another PTSA member, Eve Ortiz, then says, “We’re gonna try to do Blenders … we’re thinking of Hana Kitchen, maybe some kind of burrito,” when brainstorming the ideas for food they can sell in the Student Store. “As long as we don’t compete with the cafeteria. It has to be healthy and we can’t prepare it,” says Borgioli. The women are all very interested in knowing what foods students would want them to sell. “Send us recommendations!” says Ortiz. “What are their favorite snacks? What would keep them on campus? Tell them to come by!” she accentuates.

In addition to the snacks and drinks sold in the Student Store, there is a decent selection of SBHS merchandise up for purchase. Hoodies, t-shirts, Dons hats, stickers and sweatpants are all for sale. The apparel is run by the ASB, giving them the profits for all sales. The profits from the food and drinks sales go to PTSA, who use it towards the Learning Enrichment Grants for the most part, but also club grants, senior activities and teacher appreciation events.
The PTSA will be looking for volunteers through Parentsquare, who can work a shift during lunch hours to help them out. “Parents can sign up for two days a month. Hopefully, we’ll have parents every day, and PTSA will stock support if people can’t work,” says Borgioli.
