Nicole Buist is a passionate tennis player and one of the most standout athletes representing Santa Barbara High School (SBHS). Ever since joining the varsity tennis team as a freshman, Buist has continued to make her mark through her hard work, accomplishments and leadership both on and off the court. Her love for tennis has been prominent for as long as she can remember, and over the years, it has grown into a large part of her identity.
Her current coach at SBHS, Shane Carmody, first met her in 2016 when she was a younger player partaking in a parks and recreation summer camp. Even at a young age Carmody remembers being impressed with her drive and ability to be a “stand out player in the camp.” That early impression carried through as Buist grew into one of the school’s most talented players.
Teammates describe Buist as “supportive,” “motivated” and “someone to look up to,” both on and off the court. She has earned respect for her skill in the game and she is known for her character and the way she treats others around her. Even as a varsity player Buist can still be seen at matches cheering on the junior varsity players whenever she can. Buist explained how tennis sometimes, “can be challenging because of the solo aspect of the sport” which is why she makes an effort to be there for her teammates and the junior varsity players at their respective matches.
In her own game, Buist is an expert at not letting the stress of an upcoming match take control of her. Her calmness and focus during high-pressure moments have made her recognisable in the sport. Buist’s ability to stay balanced has led to many victories, and she has become a role model for younger players learning to handle competition.
One of her most memorable moments came during her freshman year when she defeated Natasha Gill, the top player in her league, which broke the players two year winning streak. That win set the tone for the rest of her high school years and established her as a serious competitor in her league.
In the seasons that followed, Buist went on to win the CIF Division III title, and make it to CIFs top 16 doubles championship with her sister, Caitlyn Buist in 2024. In the 2025 season, Buist was undefeated in the Channel League, not losing a single set in singles and doubles, winning the Channel League Singles championship.
Buist’s tennis passion doesn’t stop after school hours. Outside of school she works at Knowlwood Tennis Club in Montecito which allows her to connect with people through her sport while also giving her the chance to help athletes of all ages.
As a senior, Buist hopes to continue playing tennis through college. Although she hasn’t committed or chosen a school yet, her future in the sport is promising. Buist’s many years of hard work, commitment, and experience with the game have set her apart as a strong athlete and leader. Wherever she ends up the following year, there is no doubt that Buist will continue to inspire those around her in game and off.
