Jujustu Kaisen released the first two episodes of season three on January 8. The season has been long awaited especially with the cliffhanger in the previous season. In season two there were numerous character deaths during the climax of the conflict, the Shibuya Incident. The season ended with the main antagonist, Kenjaku releasing huge amounts of cursed spirits with Sukuna causing mass destruction to the city. Sukuna is a god of cursed spirits. He can take over a person’s body if they consume the cursed object he’s in, which is his fingers. The previous protagonist Yuta Okkosu pledged to kill Yuji Itadori who is the main protagonist. He is being hunted because he’s Sukuna’s vessel.
Many fans were excited to see more of their favorite character and find out how the plot will expand. Cassie Gonzalez, a freshman at Santa Barbara High School (SBHS) says she was most excited to see the character Choso return. “I like his ability and his design, it’s pretty tough.” Choso was just recently introduced in season two and is Yuji’s older brother. Victoria Trujillo, another freshman, says she’s most excited to see Maki and Yuta in the new season. “I for sure want to see Yuta, he’s not a fraud. As well as Panda if he isn’t dead.” Seasons one and two was a big change, especially story wise. A lot of the major conflict isn’t introduced until later in the second season. Trujillo says she hopes to see more of the character Geto’s flashbacks even if it’s very unlikely. “One thing I want to see in the new season that probably won’t happen is more Geto flashbacks. He’s awesome.” Trujillo also reminisces with the earlier “slice of life” episodes the series had before. “One of my favorite scenes is when Megumi and Nobara were with him and they were trying to hide the fact that they ruined Gojo’s expensive shirt.”
The first episode immediately starts off with Choso and Yuji running from the released cursed spirits. This is surrounded around the introduction of one of the new characters, Naoya Zenin. He wants to become the successor of the Zezin clan. To do so, he has to kill the current successor, Megumi Fushiguro. The first episode ends with Yuta ‘killing’ Yuji.
The second episode starts off with showing Yuji alive and well. Yuta luckily healed him with the reverse curse technique before he died. He later explains that he never intended on killing Yuji, he just needed to fake his death so the higher ups would leave him alone for now. The Culling Games are introduced in this episode and explains the situation for the future episodes to come. The Culling Games to put it simply is like a big game. In order to stay alive you need to either kill a regular citizen or a jujustu sorcerer. The higher the life values to Kenjaku the higher the reward is. The story itself is really captivating and interesting. The animation has also been improved so much more. The animation was already very impressive but it’s gotten even better.
The first two episodes were done really well. The episodes and story are well-paced and the story really kicks off immediately after. One of the main issues for me and a lot of other fans is Nayoya’s character. Evelin Figueroa, a freshman, explains their main concerns with his character. “I’ve seen the few panels where Nayoya is mentioned, and based on those panels I’ve got to say that I don’t really enjoy his point of view on women at all. “if women don’t know how to step behind a man, they should get stabbed in the back”. His words, not mine.” It’s not a foreign concept of having a problematic character, but Nayoya especially makes watching the show a bit worse. His constant rambles, and his very concerning ideals for women is such an unbearable part of his character. He hasn’t contributed much to the story as well so he just feels like an extra character that spouts the most misogynistic nonsense every few minutes. He’s just an overall unbearable character.
Season two was a very emotional one. It involved multiple major character deaths as well as a big sense of loss in the story. Gonzalez says she wants more happiness in the later season. “For Yuji to be happy but that’s not gonna happen.” Gonzalez says she predicts more character deaths will happen later on in the show. “I don’t know much of what’s happening in season three but isn’t there The Culling Games? After that I think everyone is gonna die.” Trujillo says “I think Choso is gonna lock in and slime out Sukuna.” The second season’s cliffhanger ends at the peak of the conflict. Gonzalez believes more character deaths will happen later on in the story. “Everybody’s gonna die, except Yuji. The author is killing off every single character.” The first two episodes were really well done. The story’s pacing is fine and students are excited to see the future characters introduced and how the season will end.
