One of the distinguished academies here at Santa Barbara High School is the Computer Science Academy (CSA), which many students are familiar with. However, what most might not know of is the CSA Leadership Club. The Leadership club brings together students from all backgrounds to bond over their shared love for Computer Science. It allows students to share interests, experience a leadership role, and advocate for the CSA’s larger community.
Kyle Stewart, the club’s advisor, has just recently acquired ownership of the club from former advisor, Sky Adams. Stewart states, “The purpose of the CSA leadership club is to help support the students in the Computer Science Academy in order to build community, in order to have some fun events.” He continues to say students should want to join because, “It’s a fun way to get to know some of your classmates better, have some fun events, and kind of take more leader control and be more involved in computer science.”
The Leadership Club discusses and plans party events, such as the CSA winter break party and end-of-year party, promotes the academy, organizes outreach events, and manages merchandise sales and funding. One upcoming event that it has planned is the Channel Island Field Trip, where students will be able to take a boat out to the Islands and learn about the island’s management. Not only is the club a great way to become more involved in the community, but it’s also an opportunity to take on a leadership role to build skill and add to college applications.
President of the club, Lucy Kronberg, has been involved since her freshman year. Kronberg has been a part of both the Academy, and the club since freshman year. She started her year in the Academy, and later discovered the club through an outreach event. Since then, she has remained active and has worked her way up to be the President. She states, “It’s one of my favorite clubs,” and describes how the supportive environment allows every meeting to feel like simply lunch with friends.
The CSA Leadership Club is always on the lookout for new students, whether that be those already in the Academy, those who want to join, or those who aren’t in the academy who just like computer science. The community currently consists of ten active members, meeting twice a month on Wednesdays to discuss CSA related topics. If computer science is an interest, the Leadership Club is always open to drop ins.
