Every year, people make New Year’s resolutions, but not everyone follows through. According to the Pew Research Center’s article New Year’s resolutions: Who makes them and why, only around six-in-ten adults keep all their resolutions. Many students around campus already have their yearly goals set.
Mrs. Piasecki, a math teacher at Santa Barbara High School (SBHS), says, “We’re doing a remodel on our house, so I would like to finish that… hopefully it happens, it has been a long process, so I’m hopeful.” Ms. Timmerman, a Spanish teacher at SBHS, says, “Health is definitely on the list… swimming was something I used to do in high school, and I think it’s awesome exercise.” She also says that she wants to get back into yoga and get to know more of her fellow teachers. Timmerman gives herself good odds of reaching her goals, about 85% likeliness according to her.
Some students have also set resolutions this year, a SBHS junior, Noah Roldan, says one of his New Year’s resolutions is to be more positive. “I just want to be overall more chill, focused, and have better communication skills.” Victoria Trujillo, a freshman, says her goal this year is to learn how to swim, “I’m on the swim team, so I’m gonna have to lock in or I’ll be on the bench warming it.” Along with Trujillo, two other freshmen, Cindy Montes Miguel and Isabella Konheim state their goals for this year as well. Montes says her goal is to be nicer to people, with a plan to follow through on her resolution. Kohnheim says, “My goal is to finish my work on time, I’m a hardcore procrastinator.” She shares that she’s gonna try to stop procrastinating as much this year, like turning in assignments on time. Lia Velazquez, a sophomore, says she didn’t make any resolutions for the new year, but her goal this year as she states, is, “As always, trying to be more social… I don’t have the obligation to follow through with this goal… but it’s a good thing to work for.”
The College and Career Center also features goals this year. Spencer Barr and Ana Luna have a few in mind, “I don’t have any specific resolutions, but I did join a leadership program this year, so my word of the year is growth.” Spencer remarks, “I’m going to try to push myself in terms of my leadership… I joined a paid program, so I’m going to do it.” While Barr has his mind set on leadership growth, Luna has her mind set on her creative side. She says, “I never usually make them cause I don’t stick to them, but my goal for this year is to focus on my creative stuff.” She shares that she’s pushed many of her creative hobbies to the side, and really wants to do them since she has more time on her hands in the new year. “I’m trying to prevent myself from filling up with work.”
Some people choose to make goals specifically for the new year, and others choose to make life goals, either way a goal is a goal, and our community should applaud the effort of those willing to stick to them.
