As the winter sports season gets underway, the Santa Barbara High School (SBHS) girls basketball team is building momentum with strong leadership, growing chemistry, and a positive team culture. With a mix of experienced captains and younger players, the Dons are focused on improving each game, while supporting one another on and off the court.
Senior captain Audrey Castillo has been playing basketball all four years at SBHS and is excited to step into a leadership role. “I feel very excited about it. I feel like I can help the team a lot by being very enthusiastic with them and making sure none of them get their feelings down or anything, and making sure they stay motivated throughout the entire season.” Castillo said. She has already noticed improvement from last year, adding, “I feel that the team is a lot healthier this year and everyone gets along with each other, and we are more unified than last year’s team.”
Despite the progress, Castillo believes there are still areas to improve. “Our communication on the court isn’t the best, and I feel if we have better communication, we could get the things on the court moving a lot faster,” she said. One of the ways the team stays close is through humor, “…we all make jokes with each other, they can make absolutely no sense, and still everyone will understand what we mean.” For Castillo, this sport is more than just the score. “The friends you make along with it, yes, winning games with the team is fun, losing is not as fun, but it’s so fun being with the team, but it’s the people you meet along the way and the friendships you create with them.”
Junior captain Eva Rodgers, who has been playing basketball since eighth grade, is also embracing her leadership responsibilities. “I’m really excited, it’s a really cool way to step into more of a leadership role, so that makes me really excited,” Rodgers said. With a younger team this season, she has seen steady growth. “I think it’s been different because we have a really young team this year, but I think we have been growing a lot as a new team, and we have been getting better every game.”
Rodgers says the team is working on fundamentals and execution. “Executing our offense and more of the fundamentals, and getting fewer turnovers.” She also emphasized the importance of team chemistry. “I feel like we’re not just teammates, but we are all friends, and that feels different this year, and it’s more that we each have a connection with one another, and that makes it a more positive experience from on and off the court.” To Rodgers, the most important part of basketball is simple. “Teamwork and lifting each other up because it very much is a team sport, and it’s a hard sport, and I think it’s that team aspect of it.”
Head coach Andrew Butcher, who has been coaching basketball since 1982, is proud of the team’s effort and attitude. “We have a fabulous group of young student athletes, they work hard every day, they practice with enthusiasm, they get along well, I’m so proud to be their coach, we are low on experience but they learn every game, so I am proud to be associated with them.” He also pointed out a change from last season, “I don’t want to criticize last year, but I think that these teammates come to practice every day, ready to work and learn, and I think they all show up to practice with a really good attitude.”
Butcher believes the team’s youth and willingness to improve are major strengths. “You know, they are young and athletic and willing to learn and you can’t beat that.” Bonding has also played a key role in their success, “…we are a community, and we have done an overnight, which was an excellent bonding experience for them.” When it comes to building trust and chemistry, Butcher said, “experience; positive experiences help the most.”
As the season goes on, the SBHS girls’ basketball team is continuing to grow together and learn from each game as they play. With strong leadership, a young but motivated squad, and a supportive team environment, the Dons are focused on improving and having each other’s backs on and off the court. While wins are important, this team is showing that the relationships and experiences they build throughout the season matter just as much.
