Both the girls and boys Tennis teams had an exciting season, with many achievements, proud moments, and battles on the court. Both teams qualified for CIF playoffs —The girls team made it to the CIF quarterfinals in Division 5, while the boys team lost in a close match in the Division 3 openers against Cate.
The girls team, along with San Marcos and Dos Pueblos, dominated the Channel League landscape across their season. Their Channel League record was 6–4, and their overall record was 10-7-2. The girls’ primary strength is teamwork, according to Head Coach Shane Carmody. “Everybody finds a way to contribute to make the team better, because everyone cares enough to do that and push themselves to be better when their moment comes.” The team had big accomplishments in CIF individuals, with senior Nicole Buist winning the Channel League singles Individual title, making her the top singles player in the league. Makena Taylor, another senior, finished the season with the All-Channel League Second Team.
Meanwhile, the boys team wrapped up their season with many victories, especially their final status as Channel-League champions for Division 3, tied with Dos Pueblos. They were also ranked No. 1 among crosstown rivals, SMHS and DPHS. The boys had a Channel-League record of 5–1. Carmody spoke to the players’ ability throughout the season when he said, “I’m most proud of what we were able to do with the amount of uncertainty there was going into it.” The team had 5 seniors: Simon Rencher, Milo Rencher, Elliot Cantu, Taisei Lopez, and Huxley McGettrick. Overall, the boys’ season was a strong performance of teamwork and grit.
Both tennis seasons were filled with perseverance, competitive matches, positive attitudes, and wins that will fuel the girls and boys teams as they continue their tennis careers. The senior classes have helped set the standard for commitment and teamwork that will continue to shape the program, even after they graduate.
