Lights Up Theatre Company just wrapped up their most recent production of The Wizard of Oz Lights Up is a Santa Barbara-based theatre company designed for middle school through high school students who are passionate about performing. They put on full production shows in the fall and spring. The Wizard of Oz was brought to life at our very own Santa Barbara High School theater. This production was worked on not only by the Lights Up cast members, but also by Santa Barbara High School students. Between Thursday, Dec. 4 and Sunday, Dec. 7, the company performed six shows, adding to their successful 8th season.
A lot of work went into this production, including many hours of rehearsal and set building. Costumes had a big role in bringing this production to life, with a whopping number of 350 costumes and many quick changes. With the cast being at such a vast age range, many would be hesitant to participate. However, Reid Powers, a four-year member of Lights Up, who played the role of the lion in this production, said, “While it does seem a little hectic with 30 people on stage, it’s nice to be able to work with and help mentor the next generation of Lights Up actors.”
This show was especially relevant because of the recent release of Wicked 2, the second installation in the series, focusing on the story of two witches, Elphaba and Glinda, which, in relation to The Wizard of Oz, are referred to as the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West.
Lights Up’s season isn’t yet over, so if you missed this past production, you can look for their upcoming advanced company production of The Adams Family this spring.
