The Alumni Association at SBHS offers scholarships to graduating seniors and alumni looking to continue their education. This year, the Association broke records by granting 87 recipients over a combined total of $270,000. These scholarships are given to aid Dons in their pursuit of four-year colleges, community colleges, trade schools, and certification programs alike.
Every year, about 100 students apply for the scholarships. Of these, 60-65 alumni and 20-25 current seniors are chosen on average. These recipients are granted $1,000 if attending a city college, $3,000 if attending a four-year university, and $5,000 if attending graduate school.
The requirements to receive one of these scholarships are a minimum 2.5 grade point average, completion of the digital application, completion of a digital statement, completion of FAFSA or DREAM Act to determine the necessary financial aid, and an in-person interview. Every year, the application opens in November and closes in January, consisting of three short-answer questions. Financial need is a large factor in the determination of the recipients of the scholarships.
Over the last five years, over $1.3 million has been awarded to graduating seniors and alumni.
